Description

合金状態図に関する研究は、1900年ころから盛んになり、状態図集がいくども作成されてきた。中でも、1990年に米国ASMより発行された、Massalski, Okamoto他編集の「Binary Alloy Phase Diagrams」は国際的な協力により完成したもので、二元系に対する標準的な状態図集として広く受け入れられてきた。この状態図集は3600ページもあってやや高価で、個々の利用者が手元に置いて利用するには不便であった。この問題を解決すると同時に1990年以降の新しい情報を取り込むため、2000年には「Desk Handbook: Phase Diagrams for Binary Alloys」を筆者が編集/発行し、収録する系の数も大幅に増やした。2000年以降も合金状態図に関する情報は増え続けたため、今回Handbook第2版を出版することにした。1990年版には2159の系の状態図が収録されているが、今回の版では2421の系に拡大するとともに、約900の系の状態図を更新している。
第2版も第1版と同様、1ページに3つの系の状態図を配し、それぞれに対して存在する相の結晶構造がまとめてある。また、鍵となる文献を示し、必要ならば、その系に対するすべての情報が得られるように配慮してある。こうして、限られた紙面を最大限に利用した、最新で便利な状態図集が完成した。なお、出版費用の一部を、筆者の所属する朝日大学が負担したため、第1版よりも安価に提供できることになった。
