◆20世紀末以降、特にインド洋大地震津波災害以後、津波に対する関心と警戒が高まり、津波の運搬作用を受けて生じた堆積物 "ナミアイト" の研究も激増しています。
今や堆積地質学において最も注目されるターゲットのひとつといえます。

本書は、"ツナミアイト" に関する世界で最初の総括的著作です。
まず、津波とそれによる運搬/堆積機構についての水理学的解説が与えられています。海浜から浅海、深海にわたり、また海底の地震、地すべり、火山爆発や大隕石落下など各種トリガー(要因)の津波による堆積物について、多数の代表的例が記述しています。
中生代―新生代境界の、生物界大絶滅の原因となった大隕石落下による大津波の堆積物については、これまでの研究が総括されています。

複数の章にわたり、津波に関係する堆積物の特徴が指摘/解明され、現認、観測されていない津波堆積物を大波や潮汐による堆積物から識別するための注目点や調査手段/方法などにも指針を与えており、また、これにより津波堆積記録の探索が、先カンブリア紀にさかのぼる地球のテクトニクス史などの研究に資する可能性が示されています。

巻末には430を超す文献リストが挙げられ、2005年までの津波関係堆積物研究を網羅しており極めて有用です。
